Artists and Community Invited to Workshops on Digital Photography of Artwork


            Artists and the general public interested in taking photos with digital camera equipment are invited to two workshops—“Photographing Artwork Using a Digital Camera.” Both workshops will be at the Trinity County Office of Education Resource Room (next to the CD Hall). The first workshop will be on March 8, from 5–7 pm. The second workshop will be on March 22, from 5–7. There is a charge of $5 per person for each workshop, to be paid at the door.             The workshops are jointly sponsored by the Trinity County Arts Council and the Trinity County Office of Education, with the goal of helping artists and others in the community become familiar with producing digital images of artwork.

            Workshop I will offer an overview and cover equipment basics. Topics include:

·   Keeping a photographic record: Why and how to keep a photographic record of your artwork

·         What does it all mean? Definition of terms

·         The quality question: Pros and cons of digital cameras for photographing artwork. Examples of good or bad digital images of artwork, depending on use of the camera

·         Taking and transferring the picture: Set up, lighting, framing, getting a good image, camera software

·         Equipment: What cameras will do what you need and where to buy

·         Resources: Where to go for more information

            Workshop II will treat the subject more specifically, with step-by-step demonstrations. Topics include:

·   Setting up and shooting a good image: How to get the proper color reproduction, basics of lighting, how to avoid distortion and reflections, examples of good and bad artwork images for two- and three-dimensional artwork

·         Transferring the image: How to use a software package to transfer an image to the computer

·         Manipulating your image: How to make adjustments in color and format using such software as Photoshop

 

            The workshop presenter, Jill Richards, has thirty years experience as a photographer. She is a professional photographer of events, pets, and large-scale product. She has taught photography workshops in the Bay Area for the neophyte to the experienced camera user. She was manager of several camera stores in the Bay Area and is highly knowledgeable about the photography trade, from composing a shot, to the ins and outs of equipment, to darkroom skills.
